Dear Area Boilermakers, All of our events for the July 1 to June 30th year that the Purdue Alumni Association (PAA) uses for determining award status (i.e., Gold, Silver, or Bronze) are completed. We had a good year. Because of our number of football and basketball watching parties (including the first one with the local IU club), our social events, our successful Annual Business meeting with PAA’s Executive Director and CEO Kirk Cerny, our support and participation in local Big 10 events, our work in recruiting new students for Purdue, our successful food drive (341 pounds of food and $12 were collected and given to Sarasota and Manatee Counties’ food banks), and our recruiting of nine new members for PAA, we should be in great position to again be one of PAA’s Gold Clubs. Thank you for your support – it has enabled us to give scholarships and to plan activities that we would not have been able to support without the funding we get as a Gold Club from PAA. OK, so what are we going to do for you in the near future? First, we will have some Tervis Tumblers with our new Club logo for sale at each event. The cost is $15 for a 16 oz tumbler and $13 for a 12 oz tumbler. About 10-15% of what you pay will go towards our scholarship fund. So continue to watch this website and the Club Events for chances to purchase these unique items. We’ll try to keep the Website up-to-date. Shortly, we will be having our Annual Beach Party and Picnic, but with a twist. Since Sarasota County raised their fee by a factor of almost 4, we are going to try this year’s event at Coquina Beach on the southern end of Anna Maria Island. Keep Saturday July 26th open for some fun at the beach! Let’s see if we can crown a new horseshoe champion! This year we’ll have three football watching parties, so come and cheer us on to a National Championship (we might as well think big!) when we play Notre Dame on Sep 27th, Minnesota on Oct 25th, and IU (jointly with the IU club where we’ll win the second annual Old Oaken Bucket Trivia Contest) on Nov 22nd. The Holiday Event will have a different venue since the Sarasota Yacht Club is tearing down their old building. We are exploring some exciting ideas and we’ll let you know as soon as we have something booked. Again watch the Club Events. There will be two opportunities for you to rub elbows with all of the other local Big 10 folks – the first is at a Tailgate party on Oct 17th and then at their Annual Luncheon on Jan 24th. Retired football coach Lloyd Carr will be the speaker at this luncheon. Next come basketball and our “Baby Boilermakers” should have grown and will again contend for and win a Big 10 Championship! We will have our Annual Business Meeting and Social in March. We’ll probably have other things sprinkled throughout the year, so watch this website or get on Jack Miller’s email list and get his “cool” updates. Email Jack at Diannjack@msn.com and ask to be put on his list. Also, we will continue to collect food for our local food banks at each of our events. Because of our local economy, these important services need support. This is a small way that we more fortunate can help those that are not as fortunate. We hope that these events will keep you excited and waiting with baited breath to get together with your fellow Boilermakers!!! As usual, we still need to recruit people for the PAA in order to get our recognition awards. We prefer a GOLD award because it allows us to give more scholarships to local students and to do more for our local Club. To obtain Gold status, we have to recruit nine new members each year. So if you are not a member of PAA, please contact me and I’ll get you an application. Thanks. Have a great summer and we hope to see you at many of our events. Cheers and Go Boilers!
