Reasons for Establishing Scholarship

  1. To increase the awareness of Purdue University in Connecticut.
  2. To support outstanding Connecticut students who have chosen Purdue University.
  3. To acknowledge and reward high scholastic achievement and community involvement.
  4. To provide the opportunity for Purdue alumni living in Connecticut to support and promote Purdue and the club in the state.

The intent of the Purdue Club of Connecticut is to continue to grant annual scholarship awards to selected students who meet stipulated requirements. The yearly goal will be to raise as much as possible to establish a permanent interest bearing account administered by the Purdue Foundation. The ultimate goal will be to establish an endowed scholarship program, priority will be given to providing money for annual scholarship awards. The amount and the number of awards will be determined by the scholarship Committee annually and reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors of the Purdue Connecticut Club, Inc. The defining criterion will be the success of the fund.

Selection Committee Weighing System:

The following information will be used to evaluate candidates for scholarships:

  1. Academic History that includes: grades, level of courses taken, grade point average, honors, and national test scores.
  2. Community Service Record including amount of time and any awards.
  3. Application Presentation: organization, format, grammar, and sincerity.
  4. Employment Record: how much time and the portion of the year.
  5. Sports, Extra Curricular Interests: sports, recreation, hobbies and awards.
  6. Statements Within Application addressing educational and career goals, in combination with a self-assessment of interests and motivations in his/her high school work.
  7. A minimum of Two Letters of Recommendation from teachers, guidance counselors or persons familiar with the student’s character and performance.

The Scholarship Application shall be a listing of what is to be included in the prepared application with the organization and presentation left to the discretion of the applicant.

The Scholarship Committee, upon receipt of all interested applications, will evaluate and select worthy scholarship candidates. The award is of course, contingent upon the acceptance of the candidate by and enrollment in Purdue University.

Deadline for receipt of scholarship applications will be May 15 of the year of the award. Recipients of the scholarship awards will be notified in July.

Primary focus will be for incoming freshmen. Secondarily, opportunities for undergraduate students at Purdue who meet University academic standards may be considered; as funds permit.

The Purdue University Development Office will administer the scholarship and the Division of Financial Aid will be informed of the award winners and will be responsible for the disbursement of funds and the monitoring of second semester eligibility.

Distribution Criteria Used by the Purdue Club of Connecticut:

  1. Candidate must be a resident of Connecticut.
  2. Money is to go directly toward tuition fees and be made in two payments annually, each at the beginning of the semester.
  3. A student must maintain full time status (based on an eight semester graduation schedule) and maintain a 2.5 out of 4.0 point grade average to receive the second semester payment. In the event the student does not meet the requirement, the second semester portion will be forfeited and will remain in the interest bearing account. The scholarship committee shall have discretionary privilege to adjust the minimum grade requirement.
