An engine donated by Pratt & Whitney is unveiled
in late November at the Purdue Airport. The PW4098
engine, which is housed at the airport's power plant
lab in Hangar 2, gives students a hands-on education
of an engine used in today's commercial aircraft. The
engine is more than 10 feet tall and produces 98,000
pounds of thrust. Two such engines power the Boeing
777. Read more here. |

Purdue
introduces 11th president
An internationally recognized astrophysicist who is chancellor
of University of California, Riverside, was chosen Monday, May
7, as the 11th president of Purdue University. The Purdue
Board of Trustees, meeting on the Loeb Playhouse stage, voted
unanimously to hire France A. Córdova and then brought her on
stage to the music of "Hail Purdue."
Córdova, 59, has served at Riverside since 2002, coming from
the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she had
been vice chancellor for research and a professor of physics
for six years. Before that, she was the youngest person to
hold the position of NASA chief scientist, working on projects
that included the Hubble Space Telescope.
J. Timothy McGinley, chairman of Purdue's Board of Trustees,
announced Córdova's selection after a seven-month search for
a successor to Martin Jischke, who will retire on June 30
after serving as Purdue president since Aug. 14, 2000. Read

BOILERMAKERS
On October 26, 1891,
the Purdue football team was for the first time called
"Boiler Makers" by a Crawfordsville reporter
who wrote about Purdue's 44-0 trouncing of the Wabash
side. Soon after, Lafayette newspapers picked up the
name, and in October 1892 "The Purdue Exponent"
gave it the stamp of approval. In the early days of
Purdue football, the team was called other names as well,
including "haymakers," "railsplitters,"
"sluggers," and "cornfield sailors."
